A Land of Gold

A group of foreign engineers have approached you with a dramatic proposal - carve a canal through a narrow isthmus that impedes ship travel between two large seas. This would cut sailing time by days - maybe weeks - but would also be very expensive. Not to mention the fact that the isthmus belongs to someone else.

The Fruits of Wedlock

Novice
Rich in mineral resources and cultural unity, Hungary is a good starter nation for new players who want to explore Administrative play in Europa Universalis V. A significant tax base allows for quick expansion of industry and craftspeople. The Carpathians will slow down invaders from the north, and the German and Bohemian states to the west are friendly, so you can focus on domestic concerns. 

Experienced
Naples, in southern Italy, has a lot of potential for more experienced Administrative players. Agricultural wealth is the key to prosperity here, especially in the production of fruits and wines. The single major land border is with the Pope, meaning you have a reliable buffer state between yourself and the hungry republic of the north. The large and growing population gives you a strong foundation for rapid internal expansion, and your compact east-west dimensions simplifies travel.

Advanced
Trapped in a personal union with Sweden, Norway may seem like an unlikely starting nation, but Advanced Europa Universalis players will find a satisfying challenge here. With foreign policy conducted from the palace in Stockholm, a Norway player can devote their time to harvesting the vast national resources of this Scandinavian kingdom, especially the forests and fisheries. Once you have a strong domestic foundation, you can leverage that power to break free from Sweden while it is distracted.

Novice
Your diplomatic tendencies and relative unfamiliarity with Europa Universalis games means that Aragon might be a good starting nation for you. This Iberian kingdom looks east across the Mediterranean, building strong marriages and partnerships with the Italian kingdoms. Aragon is also well-placed as a trading nation, with many ports and a strong galley fleet to protect the merchant ships.

Experienced
If you have some experience with grand strategy games, Flanders might be an interesting starting nation for Diplomatic players. It’s not yet the trading powerhouse that the Low Countries would become a few centuries later, but a flourishing textile industry and rich farmland mean that Flanders starts in a strong economic position. Though densely populated, its location at the far end of Western Europe could spare it the worst of the Black Death. Flanders is also surrounded by friends, adding further security.

Advanced
Venice is, by far, the strongest European trading nation in 1337, but this strength can make it a challenge, suitable for Diplomatic players with hundreds of hours under their belt. The Venetian port dominates the Adriatic Sea, and island outposts across the Eastern Mediterranean. This power makes Venice a target for rising empires like the Ottomans and Mamluks, as well as jealous Italian rivals like Genoa and Florence. Use your wealth to build strong mercenary armies that will protect your interests far and wide.

Novice
If you are new to Europa Universalis and grand strategy games, we would recommend starting with the Ottomans to suit your Military nature. The Ottomans start Europa Universalis V with both a small professional army and a number of early missions that allow for quick expansion throughout Anatolia. Historically, Ottoman expansion in the late medieval era was briefly checked by the invasion of Timur in 1402, but they would quickly rebound, spreading across the region and, fifty years after the humiliation at Ankara, would end the rule of the Byzantines in Constantinople, beginning centuries of rivalry with the rest of Europe.

Experienced
If you have some experience with grand strategy games, Military aligned players may want to consider playing Castile. A rising kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula, Castile has clear military goals - driving out the last of the Muslim rulers to the south, maintaining dominance over Aragon and Portugal. Historically, this expansion under Alfonso XI was paired with major government reforms to stabilize the kingdom. Quick action is demanded before your southern rivals can unite or find strong allies to deter the Reconquista.

Advanced
A superpower familiar to advanced Europa Universalis players, France provides a strong starting challenge in Europa Universalis V. The kingdom is divided, with many subjects wavering in their loyalty to the Valois throne. Burgundy and Brittany are ready to strike at the first sign of weakness, and France faces an early game crisis with the English pushing their claims in what would become the Hundred Years’ War. But France is rich in resources and manpower. Can you bring this power to bear and survive to fulfill your national destiny?
